Borstal Boy
Year:
2000
Country:
Ireland
Director:
Peter Sheridan
Starring:
Shawn Hatosy, Danny Dyer, Lee Ingleby, Robin Laing, Eva Birthistle and Michael York.
Synopsis:
Based on bisexual Irish poet and writer Brendan Behan's autobiography, an IRA member is sent to a boy's reform school where he learns to love the English.
Quick review:
There is a lot to like about this World War II period film and it makes a strong statement about the natures of love and hate. Young Brendan is captured by British police as being a member of the IRA and intending on misbehaving. He's sent off to a reform school where he experiences his first same-sex attraction. There's also a fling with the daughter of one of the British officers at the school. Through that relationship, Brendan's feelings about the British begin to change. They are no longer the enemy and have become a people he can respect, despite his political differences. More people should learn to love their enemies like Hatosy's character does in this movie.
