Quick review:
I didn't know what to make of this film when I first saw the description. Was it a documentary? A traditional movie? A drama? Just what the hell was this? Then I watched it. Turns out it mixes all of the above into one terrific film. The excellent combination of mixing in history with relevent topics of today scratches just the right itch. This is the best gay film I've seen to deal with black Americans, a segment of the gay population often forgotten by Hollywood. Perry is a college student who has been thrown out of his house by his father because he's gay. He deals with the drama in his own life as he meets an elderly Bruce Nugent, a key gay writer from the Harlem Renaissance. Through Nugent Perry learns of the history of gay blacks, including such figures as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Wallace Thurman and the life of Nugent through flashbacks. Mixing so much information could be tricky and risks losing an audience, but director Rodney Evans does a terrific job and this is a fantastic film. Don't let my love of history keep you from seeing this movie.
