World According to Garp, The
Year:
1982
Country:
USA
Director:
George Roy Hill
Starring:
Robin Williams, Mary Beth Hurt, Glenn Close and John Lithgow
Synopsis:
T.S. Garp's life, from birth to death. From his eccentric asexual mother to the transgender woman who once played tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles, his story is memorable.
Quick review:
Robin Williams left behind his 'Mork & Mindy' past with this performance in an oddball movie unlike any other you've seen. The comedy is first-rate, but you also get moments of great drama. But above all else, you get unforgettable characters. The only gay angle is Lithgow's performance as a transgendered woman, but it's one of the earliest sympathetic trans characters to hit mainstream audiences. Yes, it's played up for comedic value, but it's hard not to root for the big gal.
