Einstein of Sex, The

Year: 1999
Country: Germany
Director: Rosa von Praunheim
Starring: Friedel Von Wangenheim, Ben Becker, Wolfgang Volz, Otto Sander, Meret Becker and Monika Hansen
Synopsis: Magnus Hirschfeld may have been the world's first gay activist. He founded the first gay rights group in 1897 and made a film in 1919 advocating for the end of Germany's notorious Paragraph 175, which outlawed gay sex.
Quick review: Hirschfeld was years ahead of his time, but so was Germany then. As this film shows, there was a thriving gay scene in Germany near the turn of the century. Hirschfeld even came close to pushing the German government to repeal Paragraph 175. He became the world's leading expert on sex, despite the fact that he avoided sexual relationships most of his own life (afraid of being trapped by Paragraph 175). While it is an interesting film to watch and to learn about Hirschfeld, it comes off as superficial. Any film that cover's one man's entire life in 98 minutes will do that. But it's a good introduction to an important man in gay history.
