USA

Shari L. Carpenter
Starring:

Quick review:
I should give this a 1 rating. But, there are so few movies that deal with African American lesbians, and this one is better than most low-cost films, that I'm bumping it up to a 2 despite my objections over the plot. Kali and Crystal have been lovers for a while until Kali discovers that Crystal is cheating on her. She throws her poet girlfriend out of their apartment. Kali comes off as a bit too good to be true. She's a social worker and teaches yoga in her spare time. She's always available to help friends, even covering for a coworker at the office. And she's a knockout. Reese, a new guy in the office, notices these qualities and starts falling in love. When he learns Kali is a lesbian, he doesn't stop. Kali experiments with heterosexuality and learns that for some people sexual orientation is more fluid than it for others. When Crystal reenters the picture, you have your drama. Some will object to a confirmed lesbian suddenly becoming interested in men. I'm one of them. Still, orientation is fluid for some people and maybe in this one case you can buy that Kali didn't figure it out until later in life. Still, I can see the social conservatives pointing to this movie to say, See, it is a choice and people can change. And that's a message that makes me want to give this film a low rating. However, there's enough good things in this film to overcome the low-production values and obvious budget limitations.
