Beloved Friend (Amic/Amat)
Year:
1999
Country:
Spain
Director:
Ventura Pons
Starring:
Josep Maria Pou, Rosa Maria Sardü, Mario Gas, David Selvas and Irene Montalá
Synopsis:
A college professor doesn't have much time to live, so he hopes to reconnect with the love of his life who got away. The fact that one is gay and the other is straight is only a minor complication.
Quick review:
Jaume is a semi-closeted gay professor. He's not very good looking and a bit on the boring side. Not quite your average Joe, but a lot more common than most of us want to think about. In his final moments he reaches out to two very different men to find meaning in his life. Pere was from his youth, the great love of his life who got away. Pere is straight and married. Still, Jaume can speak openly with Pere about the love he once had, and still has. But unrequited love sucks, as most of us know. Juame is also in love with one of his students, an impossible love that he knows can never go any where. Not only is there an age gap, but the student, David, is very good looking. So, he does what many middle-age men who have left their looks behind in their youth, he calls a male prostitute to satisfy his desires. You don't really need me to tell you who's on the other side of the door when Jaume opens it, do you? This movie tries to be intellectual as moralistic. In addition to the gay plot above, there's a subplot involving Pere's daughter, and his wife. This movie strives hard to be something more than just another run-of-the-mill gay film, but in the end it comes off much like it's lead character, average.
