Water Drops on Burning Rocks

Year: 1999
Country: France
Director: François Ozon
Starring: Malik Zidi, Bernard Giraudeau, Ludivine Sagnier, Anna Levine
Synopsis: A 20-year-old falls in love with an older man, who shows more cruelty than love. And just when the two men can barely stand living together, their ex-girlfriends enter the picture.
Quick review: This movie is based on a play written by legendary gay German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder when he was only 19 years old. It is shot much like a play, with one set that we rarely step out of, and even then only briefly. Franz has barely turned 20 years old and is looking forward to a life with his high school sweetheart, Anna. He allows himself to be picked up by the much older Leopold, who is 50. The seduction is on, and it doesn't take long before those heterosexual walls come crashing down. Franz has fallen in love with the older man. We fast-forward to the point in the relationship where the newness has worn off for Leopold and he seems more eager to pick a fight with his young lover than to bed him. Still, Franz is too deeply in love and willing to forgive almost anything. But the cruelty continues and when Anna stops by for a visit, she convinces her ex that it would be a good time to leave Leopold. But what good is that without one final confrontation? And then when Leopold's ex shows up the four have a hard time deciding if they will kill one another, or make love in an orgy. Bernard Giraudeau is excellent as the older man, and in his nude scene you can see how a younger man might fall for him. The most interesting part of this film is just watching it to see where Fassbinder was as a young man. And boy, oh boy, some older man must have done him wrong.
