Everything Relative
Year:
1996
Country:
USA
Director:
Sharon Pollack
Starring:
Monica Bell, Malindi Fickle, Ellen McLaughlin
Synopsis:
A group of women friends reunite a decade after they left college for the Bris of one of the women's son. Since most of the women are lesbians, there will be sparks and drama.
Quick review:
It's obvious to anyone who has seen this that the author sat down and decided to write the lesbian version of 'The Big Chill.' And that's what you get. Eight women were great friends in college, promising each other they were going to change the world. One of them died too soon in a car accident. A decade later the seven remaining friends are talked into a reunion to celebrate the birth and circumcision of one of the women's son. During that decade most of the women have grown apart and few are actively trying to change the world. They have lost their idealism and seem to be wandering through life aimlessly without the women who were so important to them in college. After the ceremony, the seven women and a current girlfriend of one of them head up to a cabin they use to share in college. There, we learn the problems of each of the women, seven lesbians and one straight gal. This movie will satisfy lesbians who rarely get good movies, but I found the happy endings a little over the top. If only life were really like that. The other distracting feature of this film is the number of cliches. Maybe in 1996 they were new and exciting, but a decade later they are worn out. Lesbian fans will enjoy the love-making scenes and most of the women are good looking. If you've never seen 'Big Chill' then you'll love it. But it doesn't quite live up to that classic.
