You Are Not Alone (Du er ikke alene)

Year: 1978
Country: Denmark
Director: Lasse Nielsen, Ernst Johansen
Starring: Anders Agensø, Peter Bjerg
Synopsis: This was a ground-breaking film when it was released in Europe, showing young gay love with sympathy and without judgment at a time when most of the world was still very homophobic.
Quick review: The very first thing you will notice about this film is the hair. My, oh my, there sure is a lot of it. Was hair so long back in the 1970s? Well, I don't need to bring out my high school photos to know it was. I was about the same age as most of these boys when this film came out. After watching this classic, I'm sure glad I'm not a teen any more. It's a slow-moving film filled with all the painful coming of age crap teen boys deal with. There are the pranks. The being tough. The act you put on for the world to see. And the times when the act falls by the wayside. Bo is a gay teen living at a Danish boarding school with about 50 other teen-age boys. Outside of some petty jealousy by the boys in town who can't afford the school, life is pretty good. Lately, he has developed a crush on the headmaster's son, Kim. It borders a little on the side of creepy, because Bo is about 16 or 17 and has pubic hair. Kim appears to be 12 to 14 and doesn't have pubic hair. And the fact I know that tells you a bit why the movie is creepy. But instead of crossing a line that many wouldn't do today, the filmmakers let this love be more emotional than physical. The boys rally to help a classmate who has been tossed out because of his love for pornography to manufacture a climax to this film. But in truth, that's not what it's about. It's about young boys, some straight and some gay, growing up and becoming men. It can be boring to watch at times, but it will no doubt take you back to your own youth. Especially if you're gay and had a crush then that was more emotional than physical. I'm rating higher than I normally would because for it's time, this was a ground-breaking film portraying gay love in a friendly manner. How many 1970s gay films can you say that about?
