Synopsis:
Stan Laurel made many short films before he teamed up with Oliver Hardy to form the classic comedy team. He's in Alaska and he's just struck gold, but someone plans on stealing his claim.
Quick review:
Before the Hays Code cracked down on Hollywood, gay people were paraded about in silent films as a way to make the audience laugh. No film better illustrates that than this one. Stan Laurel has just discovered gold in Alaska. But, a local businessman and the sherriff conspire to steal his claim. Stan decides to fight back. Nearly half of this short film is Stan Laurel and the business engage in a slapstick fight. To bring in some moments of comedy during that fight, an obviously gay cowboy prances in and out of the shot. It has all the worst stereotypes of gay people you can imagine and no filmmaker could get away with it today -- thank goodness. But this is what passes for comedy in the 1920s, when it was OK to laugh at gay people. At the end, after Stan Laurel's fight is over, our gay cowboy flirts with the hero for one last ha ha ha. While it's easy to find it offensive today, more than 80 years after it was made, it is also comforting to see that gays were at least a big enough part of American culture even then that people understood the reference.
