Guys & Balls (Männer wie wir)

Synopsis: When the teammates of a goalkeeper discover he is gay, they kick him off the soccer team. What's a gay boy to do? Get even, of course, by forming an all-gay soccer team and playing his former team.
Quick review: Ecki has been playing soccer all his life, most of it with the same group of friends in his working-class town. After a major defeat, he puts a move on one of his teammates and pretty soon everyone in town knows he's gay. He's kicked off the soccer team and his family is struggling with the news. So, he decides to do something about it. He intends to form his own soccer team of nothing but gay players and come back and beat his old team, just to show them gays can play sports. It's a silly premise, but played with all sorts of seriousness. The director leaves no sports movie cliché behind in making this film. There's the key player who can't make it, but returns at halftime. And do you really need to be told who will win the game? But, it does have some good moments, including a leather daddy who struggles to build a relationship with his son from his straight days. And since there aren't many gay sports movies, this one isn't bad if you like those kind of films.
