Coffee Date

Year: 2006
Country: USA
Director: Stewart Wade
Starring: Jonathan Bray, Wilson Cruz, Sally Kirkland, Jason Stuart, Jonathan Silverman, Deborah Gibson
Synopsis: Two men meet on a blind date, but one of them is straight and was expecting to meet a woman. The fact that he's straight won't stop him from considering a gay romance.
Quick review: Please suspend all sense of reality when entering the theater for this film. It is better watched believing anything is possible. Todd is a straight man who is just getting over a nasty divorce and can t get his younger brother to quit sleeping on his couch. The younger brother, Barry, decides to help by setting up an online profile for Todd on the Internet. Soon, Todd is exchanging e-mails with Kelly, amazed at how much they have in common. They decide to meet for a coffee date. What Barry never told Todd is that he put his Internet ad on a male seeking male Web site. When Todd arrives, expecting to find a sexy female, he instead finds gay actor Wilson Cruz, who plays Kelly. It takes a while for the two men to realize they are each other s blind date and for Todd to get over the first of what will be many gay panics. The two men decide they do have a lot in common, and while romance is out of the question, there is the potential for friendship. And the first thing they want to do is get back at Barry for messing up their date. They go back to Todd s house, holding hands, and then to the bedroom. Barry freaks out and Todd is finally rid of him. But the rumors that he s gay just won t stop. No matter how loudly he denies them, everyone just assumes he s still dealing with closet issues. It gets to the point where even Todd is starting to have doubts about his sexual orientation. It s an interesting premise, the blur between the loves of a partner or the love for a friend. It s played for nice comedy and this is a fun movie most people will enjoy. Hey, Deborah Gibson even gets a role. But reality, it ain t.
