Queens (Reinas)

Year: 2005
Country: Spain
Director: Manuel Gómez Pereira
Starring: Joaquín Oristrell, Manuel Gómez Pereira, Yolanda García Serrano
Synopsis: Same-sex marriage is about to become legal in Spain. That means mothers can do what they love best, plan a wedding. This diva-filled film stars many of Spain's top actresses.
Quick review: Considering how much straight sex goes on in this film, it's hard to call it a gay movie. Still, the premise is gay. Same-sex marriage has been legalized in Spain and 20 gay couples have agreed to be the first to get married under the new law in one mass ceremony. This story focuses on three of the couples. Actually, it focuses on the mothers of the three couples. There's one mother who is running a gay hotel; another who isn't quite thrilled her son is gay but may be forced to perform the mass ceremony; another who is a nymphomaniac and can't keep her hands off any available men, straight or gay; another who has arrived from Argentina to witness the ceremony, and to unwittingly disrupt the lives of her son and his lover; and a famous actress who doesn't approve of her son marrying the gardner's son. With this many leading women playing divas, there's little room for the gay couples. But, they do get some time in supporting roles. One couple is in a crisis because both men have recently cheated on their lover; another is dealing with the pain-in-the-butt mother and the turmoil she brings; and the third is playing matchmaker as their parents begin a romance. This film is very much a Spanish farce and it does go a little over the top at times, but is otherwise a fun film to watch. But would it have hurt to throw some gay love scenes into the mix with all that straight sex? Gay men and lesbians were obviously not the target audience. This film is for straight people. But isn't it nice to have a straight person's film deal with an issue as important as gay marriage?
