Country: Spain
Director: Joaquin Oristrell

Synopsis: It's 1913 and Alma has a problem. Her husband, Leon, has disappeared and she's not sure if he's in trouble or just cheating on her. What she uncovers are a whole lot of taboos.
Quick review: I see a lot of films from many different countries. My latest count at this writing is 40 different nations have films reviewed on this site. Spain stands out as offering some of the most unique and interesting stories. Here in the U.S. I get either sequels or remakes. Or stories so old I've seen them in different versions hundreds of times. So it's a joy to find an original film that is nothing like what you've seen before. Unconscious is such a film. Leon has left his wife Alma under mysterious circumstances in 1913 Barcelona. He refuses to tell her why, and there are hints that something dangerous is taking place. Alma turns to her beloved brother-in-law, Salvador to help. He is Leon's best friend and Alma's sister's husband. And it is obvious from the start that he is hopelessly in love with Alma. The two begin hunting down clues and soon discover a thesis that Leon was working on. In it, he describes four patients he was seeing (this film is ALL ABOUT psychoanalysis). One by one they uncover the true identities of the patients and their stories. During the course of this journey they witness or experience pornographic filmmaking, a little S&M, a transvestite party, a lesbian love affair, a husband's secret life, drug addictions, prostitution and an incestuous relationship. Nearly all the taboos are exposed before the great Dr. Sigmund Freud makes his appearance on the screen. It's a fun journey even with all the psychobabble. But what makes this film refreshing is that you haven't seen it hundreds of times in different versions. It's original. And in this summer of Shrek 3, Pirates 3, Bourne 3, Rush Hour 3 ... that's a good thing.
