Colma: The Musical

Synopsis: Three friends spend their last summer before college together looking for something exciting to do in Colma, Calif., where the dead outnumber the living.
Quick review: On the surface, you think you're not going to enjoy this film. Let's start with the characters and hook: You have the straight boy who still pines for his ex-girlfriend; you have the gay guy who won't come out to his father; and then you have the gal pal, who is wild and crazy and the life of every party. The hook has been done many times before, that awkward summer between high school and college when every child must become an adult. Then throw in its being done by a first-time director and first-time screenwriter. So you're thinking cliche movie, skip it. I'd think again. First, the choice of Colma as a setting grabs your interest. It's a small city near San Francisco that seems to be most famous for having loads of graveyards. And the movie plays that angle to its full effect. Then there are the songs by H.P. Mendoza. You've probably never heard of them before, but they are immediately familiar (TLA says they remind you of Ben Folds, and I'd have to agree). I actually replayed the opening number, Colma Stays, a few times. But it isn't just the music. Most teen films with their obvious sick humor doesn't do much for me. This one has more intelligence and is just off-kilter enough that it feels fresh. Rodel is the gay character and personifies the conflict that many gay teens are going through. He is incredibly sharp and can be vicious with his words. But he can also relax and have a good time. So in many ways this film defies the clichés that you expect going into it. It's still a low-budget film and it's still a teen film, so I don't want to oversell it. It just has more going for it than your usual low-budget teen film.
