Boystown (Chuecatown)
Year:
2007
Country:
Spain
Director:
Juan Flahn
Starring:
Carlos Fuentes, Pepón Nieto, Pablo Puyol, Concha Velasco, Rosa Maria Sarda, Eduard Soto
Synopsis:
This is a fun Spanish comedy for bears, and there are very few of those. A gay couple dealing with commitment and a gay real estate agent prone to murder battle it out in an up-and-coming gay neighborhood in Madrid.
Quick review:
There are so few films for bears that they stand out. Luckily, they are good ones but so far tend to be from Spain (thinking of 2004's "Bear Cub" and this film). Rey and Leo are a bear couple dealing with the usual commitment problems. Leo is insecure, believing that Ray is too hot and too many other men want him. Rey is tired of Leo's insecurity. An elderly neighbor dies and leaves the apartment to the couple. Rey suggests his nightmare of a mother move in, causing Leo even more anxiety. What they don't know is that the neighbor was murdered by the gorgeous Victor, who has been killing off elderly women so that he can buy their flats cheaply and then sell them off to gay couples in the trendy gay neighborhood of Chuecatown. Since Rey and Leo won't sell, and since his elderly mother is moving in, she becomes Victor's new target. There is a lot to like in this film. It's a traditional slapstick comedy, but has some complexity usually missing from that genre. It shows the gorgeous gay gay as the villain and the average-looking chubby guys as the heroes. And it deals with a serious topic like gentrification in an absurd manner, which helps bring it to people's attention without hitting them over the head. Throw in the traditional best gal pal and police detectives with issues and it's a fun experience. But the heart of the film is the relationship between Leo and Rey. That's worth picking up alone.
