Oh Happy Day

Year: 2007
Country: UK
Director: Ian Poitier
Starring: Christopher Colquhoun, Stephen Billington, Topher Campbell
Synopsis: Two men hookup after an awards banquet and both think the relationship has possibilities and agree to see each other again. But that second meeting comes a bit soon when they learn that one of them is the new client for the other.
Quick review: I like this film, especially for a date night. Yes, it's sappy and predictable, just like every other romantic comedy ever made. Still, it avoids some of the traditional cliches (no rushing to the airport at the last minute to confess undying love, thankfully). Jonathan works for an ad agency in London that has just won some major marketing awards. His boss agrees to put him in charge of the new account. At the banquet, Jonathan meets David, an American in town for the awards. Though the first meeting is a bit awkward, they hit it off and spend a good chunk of the weekend together. David even meets Jonathan's daughter, mother and best gal pal. Then on Monday Jonathan learns that David is his contact to work with on the new account he's been given charge of. The two agree to put aside their romantic interests to focus on the work, but the chemistry is too strong to let that happen. Anyone who has seen a dozen or so romantic comedy can guess where it goes from there. Aspects to like about this film: Nice to see an interracial couple; Nice to see to men who are out and no hint of any closet issues in the whole film; Nice to see no AIDS, or gay-bashing, or cheating lovers, or confused gay man subplots. I would have like to have had more love scenes between the two leads, but c'est la vie. This is a feel-good romantic comedy without any of the traditional issues that we see way too often.
