Race You to the Bottom
Year:
2004
Country:
USA
Director:
Russell Brown
Starring:
Amber Benson, Cole Williams
Synopsis:
A gay man and his straight girl friend continue a secret romance on a getaway to California's Napa Valley. But when one of them wants to take the next step, it causes turmoil.
Quick review:
Nathan and Maggie make for a strange couple. First, Nathan is gay and has a twinkie boyfriend who continually sacrifices his desires to party with his friends for the sake of their relationship. Maggie also has a boyfriend, who may not be the hottest thing in bed but is very reliable and loves her dearly. Still, the gay man and his gal pal have been having an affair for nearly a year. Nathan, a travel writer, gets an assignment for a story on the wineries in Napa Valley so he asks Maggie to join him. The two leave their loving boyfriends behind and take off for some romance. First, they stop off at some uptight friends of Maggie's for lunch and a hand job. Then it's a quick roll in the hay in San Francisco, before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. When Maggie begins to imagine a future with Nathan, things get heated. The film deals with the No. 1 topic for bisexuals, how can you ever be happy with just one gender, in a non-judgmental way. You never really get a handle on what Nathan wants or what it is he's looking for. But that lack of focus makes this a bit of a sad movie. And I suspect true bisexual men won't appreciate the portrayal of Nathan, who comes off as a jerk.
