Japan Japan

Year: 2007
Country: Israel
Director: Lior Shamriz
Starring: Imri Kahn, Amnon Friedman, Irit Gidron
Synopsis: A young gay Israeli man dreams of going to Japan while he lives out a mostly pointless life in Tel Aviv.
Quick review: The first scene of this film is a young man talking about how much he hates the cinema, how it has become so cliche and predictable it is obviously aimed for the very young. That is certainly not the case in this film. It's first shot is of an erect penis, as a young man removes a condom. The film is experimental, mixing scripted dialogue with improvisation; there are times when actors look directly into the camera and don't be surprised if they break out into an ABBA song. Imri is 19 and just out of the Israeli army (seems kind of young to be just getting out, no?). He has a new roommate, who is a little crazy. He just started a new job selling stuff few would want to buy. His one goal in life appears to be that he wants to go live in Japan for a while. Why? Well, he seems to like Japanese porn. (Really? Those sunglasses are annoying). His best friend is off on her own adventure, to New York. And that is pretty much the film. It is as pointless as Imri's life. It is hard to like this film, even if you admire the fact this first-time director tried to do something original. Mostly because there's just no point to it, and I guess, that's the point.
