Art of Being Straight, The

Year: 2008
Country: USA
Director: Jesse Rosen
Starring: Jesse Rosen, Johnny Ray Rodriguez, Rachel Castillo, Jared Grey, Pete Scherer, Emilia Richeson
Synopsis: After breaking up with his girlfriend in New York, a young man seeks to start over by moving to Los Angeles. He is soon being seduced by his male boss and considers giving in to his gay feelings.
Quick review: Jesse Rosen wrote, stars and directs the very interesting "The Art of Being Straight." He plays Jon, a young man in his 20s who has just moved in with his college best friend in Los Angeles after breaking up with his girlfriend back home in New York. He soon lands a job at an advertising agency, where the rumors immediately begin that Jon might be gay. Jon, very much a straight man with a reputation of a player, isn't sure why. When one of his bosses invites him over for drinks and to look at his photography, Jon accepts. The seduction comes in a little heavy-handed, and Jon initially resists, but he's soon tempted. A funny thing happens on the way to being straight, Jon likes his experience. Now, he has no idea what it means about him or his future. While he tries to figure things out, another college friend, Maddy, is having struggles herself. Her girlfriend wants to move in and take their relationship up a notch, but she's not certain she's ready for that. Then a handsome history teacher, a man, moves in next door and Maddy starts having straight urges she thought were long gone. This film is a bisexual's dream, because it doesn't put anyone into a box and lock it up tight. It makes the case that we're all some place in between the extremes of straight and gay and capable of finding joy there. The only annoying aspect of this film was the frat boys who can't seem to talk about anything other than fags. They are most likely closet cases themselves, with how fixated they are on the subject, but the film never explores that, it just keeps them around to annoy the audience.
