Christopher and his Kind

Year: 2010
Country: UK
Director: Geoffrey Sax
Starring: Matt Smith, Douglas Booth, Toby Jones, Imogen Poots, Lindsay Duncan, Pip Carter
Synopsis: Matt Smith (Doctor Who) portrays author Christopher Isherwood during a key part of his life, a trip to Berlin where he met people who would inspire some of his most memorable characters.
Quick review: I love the BBC. They continue to showcase great gay films that we're just not seeing on the other side of the pond. From Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith to The Line of Beauty, they take great gay books and turn them into great gay TV. In this one we get to watch the 11th incarnation of The Doctor play gay. Matt Smith, the current version of the lead character in Doctor Who, plays Christopher Isherwood, a gay writer who is just starting out on his career. He has one book published when he takes up a friend's offer and goes to Berlin for a holiday. It's 1931, the Nazis are just coming to power, and at that time in world history Berlin was probably the most gay-friendly city on the planet. Christopher delights in all the available young men who are beautiful and can be had for the right price. If a lot of this film reminds you of the hit musical Cabaret, there is a reason. Isherwood wrote the stories that musical was based on and in this film we see that some of it was autobiographical. We meet a fellow boarder in his house, Jean, who becomes the inspiration for Sally Bowles. Isherwood falls in love twice, first with a call boy who will never return his feelings. After his heart is broken he picks up a street cleaner, Heinz, who becomes his love of the next few years. But as the months pass, the Nazis take more control and things spiral in Berlin. Soon, Isherwood must escape and will do everything he can to take Heinz with him. The movie is based on Isherwood's memoir of the same name. The BBC production is terrific as always, and does not shy away from the gay scenes. There is full-frontal nudity and sex scenes that don't leave much to the imagination. Watching this film will make you wish that we had something as good as the BBC in America.
