Everyone's favorite teacher at a junior high school is suspected of being gay during the 1960s, when no gay teachers ever came out of the closet.
Quick review:
Never thought I'd include a WWE film on this site, but it's really hard to tell this is made by their studio. Randy Orton, the lone wrestler I recognized, is on screen for maybe 15 minutes. Andy is a 12-year-old boy trying not to stand out or attract too much notice at his middle school. His favorite teacher, however, has other ideas. The teacher, played by the always terrific Ed Harris, assigns him to work on a project with Stanley, who can't help but stand out. Stanley is very tall, has bright orange/red hair and ears a little too big for his head. Naturally, in the cruel environment that is junior high school, he takes a lot of verbal abuse. This film is about accepting one another and coming to appreciate all that everyone has to offer. Rumors start that the teacher, whose wife died 10 years ago and has never remarried, is gay. When the teacher refuses to deny the charge, saying that a teacher should be judged strictly on their performance in the classroom, things come to a head. But that is mostly a subplot to Andy's journey through growing up, filled with awkward and embarrassing moments we'd all rather forget. What really earned this film inclusion on this site was it's message of acceptance and compassion. We could do with more films like that.
